The major raw materials used for aluminium production, and
required in large quantities, are alumina (Al2O3), calcined
petroleum coke, liquid coal tar pitch and alumina fluoride (AlF3).
Other strategic input materials include baked anodes, potlining
materials, process materials and refractory items.
Raw material handling at DUBAL
Raw materials of the highest quality are procured from various
sources so as to ensure uninterrupted supply to DUBAL's operations.
Alumina is sourced mainly from Australia; calcined petroleum coke
from the USA and India; liquid coal tar pitch from Korea and Japan;
and aluminium fluoride from Jordan and India.
With the exception of aluminium fluoride, these raw materials
are imported through Jebel Ali Port, where DUBAL has two dedicated
berths and storage facilities for 245,000 metric tonnes of alumina;
30,000 metric tonnes of calcined petroleum coke; and 20,000 litres
of liquid pitch. The materials are stored at the dock, then
transported to DUBAL by road tankers as required. The aluminium
fluoride is delivered and transported in bulk bags by road.
