DX technology has been specified for the green-field smelter developments to which DUBAL is committed through its alliance with Mubadala Development Company. A holistic approach has been adopted for the technology transfer process: DUBAL’s reduction cell technology licence agreements provide a licence to use the company’s state-of-the-art technology, complemented by comprehensive engineering and operation documentation; full engineering services for commissioning, start-up and operations; extensive training and skills development; plus access to ongoing technical support from DUBAL.
DUBAL’s first technology licence agreement for DX Technology, signed with EMAL in October 2007, relates to the EMAL Smelter project at Al Taweelah in Abu Dhabi, which involves a 1.4 million tonne smelter to be constructed in two equal phases, where phase one (756 cells with the capacity to produce 700,000 tonnes per annum) is expected to be commissioned by 2010.
By 30 April 2008, DUBAL had delivered a comprehensive technology package to the EMAL Smelter development and management team. The package describes in detail how to implement, start and operate a DX technology potline and comprises 504 drawings, specifications, lists and procedures.

DUBAL’s DX technology has also been specified for two other green-field smelter development projects in joint partnership with Mubadala:
